Jim Bate
Jim Bate is a British conductor recognised for his thoughtful programming and assured leadership across a wide range of choral and orchestral repertoire. He maintains a varied portfolio, combining artistic leadership of established ensembles with a growing presence across the Midlands and Warwickshire.
Jim read Music at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, where he held an organ scholarship and graduated with the highest mark in his cohort for his dissertation on Schubert’s oeuvre. He subsequently undertook postgraduate study in Choral Conducting at the University of Birmingham under the guidance of Simon Halsey OBE and Julian Wilkins, conducting in major venues including Symphony Hall and Birmingham Town Hall. Jim is Director of Music for the Royal Leamington Spa Bach Choir, the Warwickshire Singers, and HSBC UK’s workplace choir. He also founded and leads PwC Midlands’ workplace choir (In-Voice), and co-founded the Elgar Scholars with Laura Bailie, serving as its co-director. In 2024, the Elgar Scholars secured a recording contract with Convivium Records following the success of their debut album, Finding Your Home. Alongside his core roles, Jim works with ensembles including the Leamington Sinfonia and the Beauchamp Sinfonietta.
Outside his musical career, Jim works as a private tax advisor at PwC, maintaining a parallel professional life in finance.
