The Armed Man, composed by Karl Jenkins
Sunday, November 27, 2011 at 9:29PM A member of the audience at the recent concert at St Nicholas Church, Warwick was kind enough to submit the following review, for inclusion in this website.
"The first half of the Warwickshire Singers concert on 19th November not only delighted the audience but also, with the performance of Adiemus, prepared us for a sincere and exciting rendering of The Armed Man. The insistent and stirring opening gave us all pause for thought in these days close to Remembrance Day, and the commentary notes gave us a welcome focus.
The sensitive approach of each chorister, under Oliver's direction, gave a particular beauty and poignancy to the Kyrie, the Sanctus and the Agnus Dei.
We were never able to forget that this is an 'anti-war piece'; the clear tone of the voices, the sensitive accompaniment of the ensemble and the dramatic insistence of the percussion swept us through a range of emotions until the haunting notes of the Thomas Mallory text 'Better is Peace' are heard. The Singers finally convinced us that that could be the case!
As always, it was a particular pleasure and privilege to hear Barbara's voice and the evocative sound of trumpet and flute."
